Temporary Institute
The Temporary Institute for Illegibility is an anti-profit organization focused on the pursuit of experience over extraction of meaning. We seek to foster brief and decentralized spaces that invite investigations into abstraction, nonsense, indeterminacy, and the social constructedness of language. Children’s art, the Fluxus and Dada movements, and a long, international history of asemic (wordless) writing have inspired this project. Anyone who is interested may join as a student-professor.
Temporary Institute’s Writing Department held a workshop to develop shared practices of making unreadable writing, as a part of the Ivory Tower and the Open Worlds Festival at The Brick in Brooklyn August 11-4, 2022. The goal of the workshop was to collaboratively build a quilt with our notations, opening up new potential pathways for reading, seeing, and communication. Due to its precarious relationship to funding, it is unclear when and where the Temporary Institute for Illegibility will appear again.
